ABOUT THE LL.M

ABOUTLLM
LL.M Group

The LL.M. Program in Sustainable Development, established by the Faculty of Law of the University of Milan, is the first Graduate Program, at European level, taught in English to focus entirely on the legal problems which are at the heart of the global agenda on sustainable development. The program provides students with a deeper legal understanding of the problems connected with the needs of the present generations regarding sustainability, and of the necessity to reconcile those with the needs of future generations. The LL.M. Program will be built on a structured approach of training and evaluating the academic and professional skills needed to integrate a deep knowledge of national, comparative and international development policies (and of the legal systems implementing them) with the three inseparable and interdependent components of sustainable development: social, economic and environmental issues.

The UN Conference, which brought together governments, international institutions, civil society, business & other stakeholders, academia and NGOs to agree on a wide range of smart and practical measures for implementing SD, adopted a political outcome document, significantly entitled “The Future We Want”.

The LL.M. Program will build upon the basic (three-year bachelor’s programs) in legal, economic and social science education. It will allow students to obtain in–depth, interdisciplinary, academic training to specialise in the key challenges faced at national, European and global level for developing and implementing the objectives (actions, policies and strategies) agreed upon by the international community during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20).

This document calls for a wide range of actions, including, among many other: detailing how the green economy can be used as a tool to achieve sustainable development; strengthening the UN Environment Program; promoting corporate sustainability measures; taking steps to go beyond GDP to assess the well‐being of a country; developing a strategy for sustainable development financing; adopting a framework for tackling sustainable consumption and production; focusing on improving gender equality; stressing the need to engage civil society, major groups and other stakeholders (of both the public and private sectors) to be actively engaged in sustainable development, as well as the fundamental contribution of scientific and technological community.

THE LL.M. & SDWATCH

Our LL.M Sustainable Development provides a unique combination of academic insights,

which are worth spreading beyond the classroom!

Many leading Universities use one or several digital tools to inform their stakeholders about their educational programmes; to attract the best talents; and to foster an ever-stronger Community spirit. Blogging gives visibility to the many facets and activities undertaken over the course of, and beyond, the LL.M.

The widespread use of this tool may also be explained by the various effects it has: as a feeder for its sister websites, including the official University platform; as a way to develop closer ties within the Community, as well as with like-minded individuals and collectives; or as a powerful channel to raise awareness on the missions the program seeks to fulfil with its students, the Faculty and with their environments. Last but not least, it intends to support the promotion of the programme, in order to appeal talented prospective students and attract them with pertinent, trustworthy, quality content.

With this platform, readers can polish their knowledge and skills in the area of Sustainable Development, with the support of an inclusive community of students and staff sharing ideas about activities, challenging topics… and a future career.

The “Sustainable Development Watch” project has potential for enhancing the visibility and the value of the LL,M, by means of providing the compelling content with a worldwide reach. Our internal and external stakeholders are committed to the quality of the teaching and research performed at the University of Milan, as well as to its dissemination within the Community and beyond. We intend to provide prime academic content on developments in the field of Sustainable Development, and to make our contribution in this field both transparent and visible.
