30.06.2018

The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on sustainable development will meet from 9 July to 18 July 2018. The HLPF is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development and it has a central role in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level. The HLPF coordinates implementation of 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and serves as the basis for the Major Groups’ work at the UN in the context of the 2030 Agenda. General Assembly resolution 70/299 provides further guidance on the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

The 2018 theme “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies” will be discussed in the context of rapid economic, ecological, social changes and emerging risks, which may undermine the progress towards achieving the SDG, advancing human development and prosperity.

Building resilience, enabling the individuals, communities and the systems to survive, adapt, grow and convert the risks into opportunities is particularly important for developing countries, where the impacts of shocks often fall disproportionately on the most vulnerable groups, individuals and communities. According to the Report of the Secretary – General, “a set of key elements have emerged as priorities for building sustainability and resilience, namely, local ownership and capacities, foresight and risk planning, policy integration, and inclusion”. Several SDGs make explicit references to resilience, capture various dimensions of it, particularly SDGs 1, 11 , 9 and 13.

This year HLPF also undertakes the first global review of SDG7, along with SDGs 6, 11, 12, 15 and Goal 17, that will be considered each year: The first week will include numerous panel and roundtables on the theme and on the SDGs under review. 47 countries will carry out Voluntary National Reviews during the ministerial meetings.
